On October 12 and 13, 2024, the Consul General of Bulgaria in New York, Angel Angelov, took part in a series of meetings and events with the Bulgarian community in and around Boston. In addition to individual meetings with representatives of our communities, he took part in two major events:
A concert of Bulgarian Choir and School "Gergana" (New York) and Bulgarian School "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" (Boston)
The Consul General welcomed the guests at the beginning of the event, which was attended by representatives from the choir and school "Gergana" from New York and "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" from Boston, as well as from schools in Cape Cod (a branch of the school in Boston) and in Rhode Island ("Bulgarian Voices", opened just a month ago).
The main event in the program was a performance of the musical "The Sound of Music", presented by children (grades 2-4) from the choir and the school in New York. The older students from school "Gergana" also took part, bringing the guests back to the era of "ABBA" with the costumes and rhythms of the time, performing "Dancing Queen" in a Bulgarian adaptation. A child from the newest Bulgarian school in the American Northeast, from Rhode Island, sang a folk song, which initiated an impromptu dance with the participation of the audience and performers. During the event, the guests remembered the contribution of Kiril Marichkov, a famous Bulgarian musician, who passed away the previous day.
After the concert, the hosts organized a pizza party for the children and guests, which gave the representatives of our schools the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange ideas for future joint projects.
Dinner to raise funds for the expansion of the Bulgarian Center building in New England
The leadership of the Bulgarian Center in New England (BCNE), which includes the school "St. St. Cyril and Methodius", the Orthodox Church "St. Petka" and the Bulgarian-American Cultural Center "Madara" organized a fundraising dinner to support the expansion of the building of BCNA.
The event took place in the home of a Bulgarian family. In his speech, the Consul General emphasized the importance of organized centers of the community (schools, cultural centers, churches, etc.) for maintaining its cohesion and preserving its connection to Bulgaria. He congratulated the Bulgarian community in Boston for the ambitious goals set for the development of BCNE, pointing out that what has been achieved so far is impressive and a solid foundation for the future.
