A Celebration of Europe and the Ties Between Bulgaria and Ireland in Co. Tipperary

20 October 2026 News

On 5 and 6 October 2026, Vanya Andreeva-Malakova, Ambassador of Bulgaria to Ireland, and Catherine Bannon, Ambassador of Ireland to Bulgaria, marked Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in County Tipperary. The initiative took place as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU and brought Bulgaria and Co. Tipperary closer together.

The visit focused on EU cooperation and the partnership between Bulgaria and Ireland. The Ambassadors visited schools, historical and cultural landmarks, libraries, community centres and cultural venues. They met with local representatives and held discussions on Europe and the role of the Irish Presidency.

The programme provided an excellent opportunity to showcase Bulgarian history, traditions and contemporary achievements. Cultural highlights included the presentation of a bilingual Bulgarian-Irish children’s book of folk tales, created by children from the Bulgarian schools “Vasil Levski” in Shannon and “Rayna Knyaginya” in Dublin and Cork, as part of a project by the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad; a photography exhibition by Diana Dimitrova dedicated to the Kukeri tradition; and a concert featuring outstanding performances of Irish and Bulgarian folk music.

We would like to express our gratitude to Tipperary County Council, Daniela Georgieva, Katya Hunter, Gabriela Ivanova, the Bulgarian students from Rockwell College as well as to all Bulgarians living in the region who attended the cultural evening at Brú Ború in Cashel.
