Bulgaria’s National Day—March 3rd, Liberation Day—was solemnly celebrated in Chicago and the Midwest region of the United States with numerous initiatives organized by the Consulate General in Chicago, Bulgarian Sunday schools, and cultural organizations.

As per tradition, the Bulgarian flag was raised at Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago during a ceremony that brought together representatives of the Bulgarian community from multiple U.S. states. The flag was carried by an honor guard from the Bulgarian-American Police Association to the sound of the Bulgarian national anthem, Mila Rodino, performed by singer Diana Mihova.

Consul General Svetoslav Stankov addressed the community, stating that March 3rd is a day “that echoes through the centuries, reminding us of the bravery of those who gave their lives for our freedom and the deep roots of our proud nation.” Congratulations were also extended by Professor Alexander Todorov, a faculty member in behavioral sciences at the University of Chicago Business School, who previously served as a professor of psychology at Princeton University for 18 years.

To mark the occasion, the Governors of Indiana—Mike Braun—and Ohio—Mike DeWine—issued proclamations officially recognizing March 3rd as Bulgaria’s Liberation Day. The proclamations highlight the significant contributions of Bulgarian immigrants to the cultural and socio-economic life of both states, from the early 20th century to the present day. For yet another year, the tallest building in Chicago, Willis Tower, was illuminated in the colors of the Bulgarian flag.
