26 April 2023 News

Тhe Consulate General in New York hosted the screening of the documentary “A Question of Survival” by the talented Bulgarian producer and director Elka Nikolova оn April 24, 2023. The event was held in the context of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during World War II.

The documentary was presented to the audience by its creator Elka Nikolova, who was present at the event. It explores the complex legacy of the Holocaust on the Balkans through the eyes of three Bulgarian Jews in New York, by telling their stories from their survival in Bulgaria during the war to their families’ immigration, first to Palestine and Israel, and then to New York in the 1950s. Through their conflicting memories, discussions, and different views on what it means to be a survivor, viewers become empathetic to the complex and dramatic fate of Holocaust survivors.

In his welcome remarks, the Consul General Mr. Angel Angelov referred to the number of significant events for the Jewish community during the current month (Yom HaZikaron, Yom Ha'atzmaut and Yom Hashoah) and informed about the events with the participation of the Consulate General commemorating the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews.

After the screening, a discussion about the film was held, which continued in an informal atmosphere during the cocktail party that followed.

Representatives of the Bulgarian and American Jewish communities in New York were present at the event.
