The Embassy of Bulgaria in the United States was pleased to join the EU Member States and the EU Delegation in Washington D.C. joint initiative “EU Ambassadors Book Collection: Words That Unite, Stories That Connect” commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
As a symbol of Europe’s rich literary heritage and enduring cultural ties between Europe and the U.S., the Heads of the Embassies of the EU Member States and the EU Delegation donated the Library of Congress with a collection of 28 books in English translation – 1 from each EU MS and 1 from the EU Delegation. Each book was accompanied by a message from the relative Head of Mission. Bulgaria donated the novel “Time Shelter” by Georgi Gospodinov, translated into English by Angela Rodel and awarded the International Booker Prize in 2023.
The Chargé d'Affaires a. i. of the Bulgarian Embassy Ms. Stefka Yovcheva took part in the official ceremony at the Library of Congress on June 4, 2026.
Another copy of Georgi Gospodinov’s novel was provided to the specially organized library at the EU Delegation in Washington. A third copy of the book was provided to the so-called “Traveling Library” – a greeting from the ЕU citizens to the American people on the occasion of the anniversary and a symbol of literature’s unifying power. The European literature will be presented to the American public by specially organized literary readings in many U.S. states as part of the initiative.
