Bulgaria welcomes UN Human Rights Council adoption of resolution on Syria

23 March 2012 News

Statement by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson after the UN Human Rights Council vote on the resolution on Syria

The Human Rights Council has with this resolution, which was proposed by 70 countries and approved with an overwhelming majority, sent a strong signal that condemns in the strongest terms the Syrian authorities’ extensive, systematic and gross violations of human rights, some of which can be described as crimes against humanity.

Those who sponsor and perpetrate such violations must face the certainty that they will be made to bear the responsibility. In this context, we welcome the extension of the mandate of the Independent Inquiry Committee to September 2012.

Bulgaria supports the resolution, that calls on Syrian authorities to bring an immediate end to violence and to ensure timely and unimpeded access for all humanitarian organisations as well as ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance.

The pressure on the Syrian regime must continue. Syria must remain a priority issue on the agenda of the Council for as long as the regime continues committing serious human rights violations in the country.
