We welcome you to the official webpage of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa. The Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Pretoria is also responsible for Bulgaria’s relations and cooperation with Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Namibia and Mauritius. Our consular district further includes Eswatini, the Comoros, Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique.
Through our website, you can obtain up-to-date information about Bulgaria, its history, culture, institutions, economy and investment opportunities, educational opportunities and travel, as well as consular matters. In the recent past, Bulgaria has built traditionally friendly relations with African countries, which it has consistently assisted and supported.
Our country has always supported the struggle of the South African people against apartheid, for democracy, equal rights and opportunities for each and every South African citizen. Leaning on our long-standing partnership, we will continue to work towards strengthening the friendship and trust between our two countries, maintaining an active political dialogue, advancing economic cooperation, and expanding ties in the fields of culture, education, and science.
The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of South Africa were established in November 1990 by signing an Agreement on the Establishment of Representative Offices. Relations at ambassadorial level were established in February 1992.
One of the principal objectives of the Bulgarian mission is to provide efficient and professional consular services and to safeguard the rights and interests of Bulgarian citizens. We remain committed to supporting the Bulgarian community in South Africa, promoting the preservation of the Bulgarian language, traditions, and culture, and strengthening the ties of our compatriots with their Homeland. For us, the Bulgarian community serves as a natural bridge for the development and deepening of relations between Bulgaria and South Africa.
Another valuable link in strengthening Bulgaria’s relations with the countries of the region is the large number of African citizens who graduated from Bulgarian universities and have retained their affection and warm regard for Bulgaria and the Bulgarian people.
