Greetings welcoming spring!

28 February 2020 News

A Martenitsa (from the Bulgarian name for the month of March) is a small redand-white ornament that is worn every March in accordance with an old custom.

This Bulgarian custom dates from before the 7th century AD. As one of the most popular Bulgarian customs and cultivated for centuries, the mutual gifting with
Martenizi is on March 1 and the following week. The red-and-white lucky charms are worn until you see a first spring sign - a stork, a swallow or a flowering tree.
Then (no later than April 1st) you hang them on a tree or put them under a stone and make a wish for something beautiful.

Following the Bulgarian custom, we would like to congratulate you on the beginning of the month of March and wish you the best of health, joy of life and
a beautiful and sunny spring!

With best regards,

Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria to Montenegro
