Participation of Ambassador Valentin Poriazov in the East Macedonia and Thrace Forum in Alexandroupolis

06 March 2023 News

The Bulgarian Ambassador to Greece, Valentin Poriazov, participated in the 1st East Macedonia and Thrace Forum in Alexandroupolis on 22 and 23 February 2023, which aimed to demonstrate the key economic and geostrategic role of these areas and their economic potential for the development of the wider region. The forum was attended by representatives of the Greek government, regional governors, heads of major companies operating in the region and others.

In the context of the first year of the war in Ukraine, Ambassador Poriazov focused on the resulting risks to the stability of Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region, as well as the opportunities that an enhanced cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece creates to address and overcome them. In this regard, the importance of Alexandroupolis and the Bulgarian areas adjacent to our common border is growing immensely.

Ambassador Poriazov drew attention to the strategic partnership achieved between Bulgaria and Greece and highlighted the opportunities for the two countries to upgrade and expand infrastructure connectivity, including railway, energy and port infrastructure.

In his address, the Bulgarian Ambassador also analysed the importance of the two Memoranda of Cooperation in the energy sector signed between Bulgaria and Greece on 16 February this year.

In the course of his visit, Ambassador Valentin Poriazov met with the Mayor of Alexandroupolis, Yannis Zamboukis. They discussed various topics, including energy, tourism, and the possibilities for strengthening cultural and economic ties between Alexandroupolis and Burgas, stemming from the twinning of the two port cities.
