Bulgarian cultural events in New York

During the months of May-June 2024, the Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York and the Bulgarian community in the northeastern states of the USA organized various cultural and educational events. Among them are:

- May 1 - The emblematic cultural initiative for the Bulgarian community, Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a concert. The central role was played by the world-famous musicians Bela Hristova (violin), Lora Chekoratova (piano) and Anna Stoycheva (piano). The Consul General in New York, Angel Angelov, together with the founders of the American Foundation for Bulgaria (Diko Mihov and Ted Vassilev) were recognized by the Initiative for their contribution to Bulgarian culture and art and received honorary plaques.

- May 9 - The Consul General was invited for the second year in a row to speak at a prestigious forum organized by the New York City Bar Association, dedicated to the Holocaust and the fight against anti-Semitism in historical and contemporary terms. The Bulgarian diplomat reminded the audience of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust, emphasizing this year the measures taken by Bulgaria to prevent and counteract modern manifestations of anti-Semitism.

- May 10 and 11 - The Consul General took part in a series of meetings and events with the Bulgarian community in and around Boston, related to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian Sunday School "St. St. Cyril and Methodius", incl. a meeting with representatives of our community from business and academia, a meeting with the management of the school in Boston and its teachers, a celebration on the occasion of the anniversary and a gala dinner with representatives of the Bulgarian community.

- May 18 – Lora Chekoratova, virtuoso piano performer, co-founder of the emblematic Bulgarian cultural initiative Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York and founder of the "Unbeaten Path: Chamber Music" initiative, gave a concert on the occasion of her 50th anniversary. The Consul General, on behalf of the Executive Director of the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, Raina Mandjukova, presented Ms. Chekoratova with "Ivan Vazov" commemorative medal for her contribution to the promotion of Bulgarian culture in the USA.

- May 19 - "Gergana" Choir and School in New York celebrated its the 20th with a festive concert in which dozens of children, parents and teachers took part. The Consul General presented congratulatory addresses on the anniversary of the school from the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, the Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tsokov and the Executive Director of the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Raina Mandjukova. The Consul General, on behalf of the Executive Director of the Agency for Bulgarians abroad, Raina Mandjukova, presented the school principal with a commemorative diploma.

- May 21 - The annual concert of the concert cycle "Musical Treasures from Bulgaria" took place in Carnegie Hall. The initiative is an emblematic cultural event of our community in New York, which is actively promoted by the Consulate General. Since 1994, the initiative presents the achievements of young and talented Bulgarian musicians, performing works of Bulgarian and world composers, and is a great example of preserving the Bulgarian cultural identity. The musical tradition began on the initiative of the world-famous Bulgarian pianist and professor at the prestigious "Mannes School of Music” in New York – Prof. Pavlina Dokovska. It is the result of the cooperation between Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York and the international foundation "St. St. Cyril and Methodius". This year, the brilliant Chris Boyadzhiev (flute) and Rozmari Manchev (piano) were presented as part of the initiative.

- May 23 – Concert organized by Charlotte White's Salon De Virtuosi, with Bulgarian pianist Lora Chekoratova as artistic director. The Consulate General included the concert in a series of celebrations on the occasion of May 24, the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment, Culture and Slavic Writing, aimed at popularizing the Bulgarian holiday among the American public. The cultural initiative presented “The Renaissance String Quartet”.

- May 24 - The Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture and Slavonic Alphabet was celebrated with an exhibition of Bulgarian artists at the Consulate General, organized by the "BG Crafts Gallery". The guests were welcomed by the Consul General. The organizer of the exhibition, Lachi Delcheva, who had personally transported all the Bulgarian works of art from St. Louis, 17 hours away from New York, told the visitors about the paintings.

- May 28 - For the second year in a row, the Consulate General, in fulfillment of its priority to support Bulgarian education in the American Northeast and its relations with Bulgaria, hosted a reception organized by the educational initiative Teach for Bulgaria, supported by the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The goals, achievements and plans of the initiative to support Bulgarian education were presented by Trayan Trayanov, CEO and Neli Kocheva, Head of "Development and Fundraising". The Consul General comments on the challenges facing children's education today and welcomes the achievements of "Teach for Bulgaria”. Special guest was Ivan Shopov –a graduate of the program, currently a Fulbright Scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He talked about his path in the classroom, the successes and challenges facing the students and the educational system in Bulgaria. The presentations were followed by a very intensive and interesting discussion on the topic of education in Bulgaria.

- May 30 - The Consul General attended the presentation of the theatrical production "The Short Life and Mysterious Death of Boris III, King of Bulgaria", performed at Theater 59 in Manhattan. The visit was on an invitation of the creators of the play, Sasha Wilson and Joseph Cullen, with whom the Consul General met after the show.

- May 31 - On the occasion of the International Day of the Child, June 1st, the Consulate General hosted the theater play "The Jumping Princess", performed by the little artists from the theater studio of the "Hristo Botev" Bulgarian school in New York with artistic director Hristina Hristova. The Consul General congratulated the children on the holiday and, according to the established tradition, presented them with Bulgarian children’s books.

- June 1 - For the eleventh year, the Bulgarian Cultural Center for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware organizes the annual gathering, Sabor, on the occasion of the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment, Culture and Slavonic Alphabet. Dozens of community representatives danced, sang and performed Bulgarian folk music, and business representatives provided the guests with food and entertainment. The Consul General welcomed the guests and pointed out that the combination of May 24 and June 1 carries a special symbolism, since it is the children who have the honor and the responsibility of accepting from their parents the love for Bulgarian culture and passing it on to their children.

- June 5 - The 2023-2024 season of the Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York ended with a concert by the Salix Piano Trio (Anna Stoycheva, Joanna Maurer and Alberto Parini) and flutist Eric Gratton. The hall was packed with classical music fans from the Bulgarian community and beyond. The Consul General welcomed the Bulgarian concert evenings for another very successful music season.

- June 13 - The graduation of the 2024 class of the "Hristo Botev" School in New York was celebrated again at the Consulate General. The Consul General welcomed the young people with the new beginning in their lives and reminded them that they have inherited the best of two authentic cultures, the Bulgarian and the American, and expressed confidence in their success in their next endeavors!

- June 14 - For the second year in a row, twenty children had a piano recital at the General Consulate. Some of the children are Bulgarian, others are trained in the art of music by representatives of the Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York. The young performers were supported by parents, grandparents and their teachers Laura Al-Ahmad, Alexander Hadjievski and Sava Vutov. The Consul General shared with the guests and performers that the aim of the initiative is to promote musical talents in children.
