The Exhibition “Bulgaria and the Mosaics” Was Presented in Norway

17/03/26

The Embassy of Bulgaria in Norway presented the exhibition “Bulgaria and the Mosaics”. The collection was unveiled at the concert “From Norway to Bulgaria with the Sulberg Brass Band”, organised by Bulgarian musician Mr. Georgi Delchev. in the town of Møndalen on March 15. This is the second time the exhibition has been shown in Norway, the first being in 2024.

As per the words of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Norway H.E. Ms. Desislava Ivanova, initiatives such as these are worthy of praise, and honour the Bulgarian community abroad, not in the least because this concert is organized by Bulgarian artists living and working in Norway. On 13 March, Ambassador Ivanova opened the fourth edition of the Stavanger International Piano Festival, also organized by a Bulgarian musician living in Norway, Mr. Kiril Kutin.

Before the concert, and during the intermission, the audience had the opportunity to explore the exhibition “Bulgaria and the Mosaics”. As part of the “Traveling Exhibitions“ program, the collection of photographs is being shown in Norway with the support of the State Institute for Culture under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. The photographs trace the culture of mosaic art over two millennia and show details of ancient, medieval and modern mosaics. Among the highlights are the Antique works spanning from the 2nd to the 6th century AD, and the contemporary mosaics of the 20th century. It was precisely in Antiquity and in the Modernist period that mosaic art experienced its most significant times of flourish.

The exhibition “Bulgaria and the Mosaics” is made by the Balkan Heritage Foundation, for the State Cultural Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria in 2023, in collaboration with Bulgarian museums, non-profit organizations and specialists in the field of art history and archaeology. The exhibition features prints of the collection for a total of 26 panels, and a website accessible via QR code containing information about the mosaics, their location on a map, as well as information about the institutions and organizations that made the selection and photographing of the mosaics possible. With this, the exhibition underlines the role Bulgaria continues to actively play in the preservation, research and dissemination of the mosaic heritage of Southeast Europe. The concept for the exhibition is by Bulgarian photographer Ivan Vasilev.

Bulgaria and the Mosaics” has so far been shown in Rome, Budapest, Bratislava, Tunis and Madrid, the first time being in Norway, in the city of Stavanger, in 2024. You may find more information about the exhibition here.
