Bridging Horizons Brings Bulgarian and Maltese Contemporary Art Together at the Mission Gallery
An exhibition by Jennings Falzon and Nina Ruseva | 15 September–6 October 2026
SOFIA, 15 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Bridging Horizons will open at 18:30 on 15 September 2026 at the Mission Gallery of the State Institute for Culture under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. The project places an artistic and cultural dialogue between Bulgaria and Malta at its centre—two European countries united by shared values and rich cultural traditions.
The exhibition brings together paintings by Bulgarian artist Nina Ruseva and sculptures by Maltese artist Jennings Falzon. Emerging from distinct artistic environments, the two artists share a common space in which painting and sculpture engage in a compelling visual and emotional dialogue.
Nina Ruseva’s paintings are characterised by a dynamic interplay of colour, light and movement. Human sensations and experiences are transformed into images in which the real and the abstract intertwine, creating a sense of freedom, movement and inner balance.
In dialogue with these paintings, Jennings Falzon’s sculptures introduce the dimensions of material, volume and physical presence. Working with stone, metal and glass, Falzon explores the capacity of materials to convey meaning and embody inner strength, resilience and balance. In his work, material is not merely a medium but an active participant in the creative process.
The relationship between material and emotion, colour and form, movement and permanence is one of the exhibition’s central themes. Bridging Horizons does not set different artistic approaches against one another; it highlights their coexistence and mutual enrichment. The encounter between painting and sculpture thus becomes a metaphor for dialogue between two cultures—distinct in their histories and geographies, yet united through the universal language of art.
The initiative is also conceived as a step towards a lasting partnership among artists, galleries and cultural institutions in Bulgaria and Malta. It seeks to create future opportunities for Bulgarian artists to exhibit in Malta and for Maltese artists to present their work in Bulgaria, thereby strengthening cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two countries.
