The Exhibition "Bulgaria and Mosaics" Visits the Historical Museum in Popovo on the Occasion of the Independence Day Of Bulgaria
After the successful international presentation of the new mobile exposition from the program of the State Cultural Institute in Rome, Stockholm, Oslo and Prague, as well as within the framework of the international forum "Archaeology and Architecture" in Bratsigovo, it will now delight the residents and guests of the city of Popovo in the Historical Museum. The event is organized on the occasion of September 22 - Bulgaria's Independence Day.
The exhibition "Bulgaria and the Mosaics" was realized in 2023 by the "Balkan Heritage" Foundation in cooperation with Bulgarian museums, non-profit organizations and specialists in the field of art studies and archaeology. It aims to present Bulgaria's rich and diverse mosaic heritage through selected details of ancient, medieval and modern mosaics, as well as to highlight Bulgaria's connection with the preservation and study of mosaic heritage in South-Eastern Europe.
Mosaics have been created by various cultures over the past two millennia. The most numerous are the mosaics from Antiquity (II - VI centuries) and XX centuries - two eras in which this art flourished and remarkable examples of it were created on the territory of modern Bulgaria. The exhibition consists of two components: print and digital. The print includes 26 panels, almost every one of them has a q-ar code that leads to a website representing the digital part of the exhibition. The site contains pages with information about the presented objects, their location on a Google map, the institutions/organizations thanks to which they are included in the exhibition and short popular science texts in connection with the history, samples, problems and practices for the preservation of mosaic art in Bulgaria and the contribution of Bulgarian organizations in this direction. The digital component of the exhibition was developed by the Balkan Heritage Foundation as a supplement to the printed mobile exhibition created for the State Cultural Institute.
Photographs from the following sites are in the exhibition: Museum of Mosaics - Devnya, Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv, Municipal Institute "Ancient Plovdiv", Regional Historical Museum - Stara Zagora, National Archaeological Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Court of Appeal - Sofia, NDK - congress center Sofia EAD, National History Museum, Buzludzha Project Foundation, Faculty of Physics of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".
