Opening of a Memorial Plaque to the Famous Bulgarian Opera Singer Elena Nikolay in Genoa

The Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Milan organized the official opening of the memorial plaque of the famous Bulgarian opera singer and actress Elena Nikolay on January 14, 2022 at 11.00 in the park of the Conservatorio Paganini in Genoa at 38 Albaro Street.

Placing a memorial plaque in honor of the famous singer, naturalized Italian is the idea of ​​the Consul General in Milan, Mrs. Tanya Dimitrova. Elena Nikolai is deeply connected with the city of Genoa, where she began her first significant professional education.

Official guests at the opening were the Municipal Councilor for Culture, Education and Youth Policy Barbara Grosso, the President of the adjacent municipality Mr. Francesco Vesco, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Bulgaria for the Liguria Mr. Michele Scandrollo, the President of the Conservatory Paganini Mr. Fabrizio Calai and the Director of the Conservatory, Mr. Roberto Taglamaco, as well as representatives of various institutions from Genoa.

Stoyanka Savova Nikolova (1905-1993), born in the village of Tserovo, Panagyurishte region, is the birth name of the famous mezzo-soprano and actress. The singer studied for two years at the Conservatory in Bulgaria, after which she left for the United States to study at the Oberlin Conservatory. He later developed his musical talent in Genoa and Milan, and then moved to Naples, singing in the largest Italian theaters.

The memorial plaque of Elena Nikolay is a symbol of the close cultural, economic and political relations that have always connected Italy and Bulgaria. This memorial will be the first symbol of Bulgarianness in Genoa, which will bring together our compatriots to celebrate national holidays, as well as attract Bulgarian and foreign tourists arriving in the seaside town. The record of our opera singer is the work of the sculptor Petko Yordanov.
