125 Anniversary from the establishment of the first German school in Bulgaria

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivaylo Kalfin and the Ambassador of Germany in Bulgaria Michael Gayer hosted the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the establishment in Russe of the first German school in Bulgaria. They opened the concert in the German Language High School “Fridrich Shiller which was organized to mark its anniversary. The Ambassador for Easter Europe of the German province Baden-Wurttemberg Heinz Kelberer was Honorary guest to the celebration.

The celebration was organized on the initiative of the joint “Bulgaria – Baden-Wurttemberg” commission and the Institute for Culture at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which supported the publication of a book in German on the history of the school. The history of the German school that existed from 1883 to 1944 on the accounts of Nikolay Chakarov is also included in the book.

In his introductory note to the readers, the Deputy Prime Minister Ivaylo Kalfin stressed that “the celebration of the anniversary of the first German school in Bulgaria coincided with the Week of Europe with which our country celebrated its second year as member of the European Union. We joined the large European family due to the close cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany. Our traditionally active relations in the field of economics, science, culture and education, including learning and studying in German have received new value. “ Minister Kalfin wished to the graduates of the German school in Russe “to become respected Bulgarian-Europeans” and cited the appeal of Ellias Canetti - the Noble-prize for Literature winner who was born in Russe – “Do not live a day without leaving a sign. Someone will need it.”
