2008 New York Bulgarian Film Festival

The sixth edition of the festival of Bulgarian films “BG – New York” took place from 4 to 19 April in the Scandinavian Cultural Centre (New York). This year’s edition is under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov. Main organizers are the Bulgaria- America Cultural Exchange – a foundation represented by Jana Karaivanova, Bulgarian artists working in New York and “Tishman International”. The festival is also supported by the Institute for Culture within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the General Consulate of Bulgaria in New York.

The main programme features Bulgarian films and documentaries that were made over the past two years and have been presented and awarded at European film festivals.

For the first time this year the additional programme features Balkan films: six short movies from Greece, Romania, Turkey, Croatia and Bulgaria. Special events feature the “Cinema talks East – West” discussion which give the audience the opportunity to talk to some of the best known Bulgarian cinematographers. The core programme this year will begin with the movie “Seamstresses” by Lyudmil Todorov.

The Bulgarian theatre and film actress Jana Karaivanova initiated the festival “Bulgarian films – New York” in 1999. Her aim was to present Bulgarian movies to the New York audience. During the years the festival managed to gain its prestigious status as the most popular Bulgarian cultural event in the USA.

Special guests to the festival are: Rangel Valchanov, Nona Yotova, Elen Koleva, Violeta Markovska, Yoana Bukovska, Georgi Stoev, Stefania Koleva, Stefan Kitanov, media.
