01/07/20

The State Institute for Culture has developed a new online initiative #A PEEK INTO THE MISSIONS, which aims to present to the general public the main landmarks and works of art found in Bulgarian missions around the world, which are part of the Art Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the motto #A PEEK INTO THE MISSIONS, the missions will be presented individually, with a selection of works of art, "a story" about them, photos of the architecture of the building, interior: stained glass, ceramic panels, mosaics, sculptures, textiles and other decorative works. The aim of the initiative is to promote the artistic heritage that is in the Bulgarian diplomatic missions and "lives" in the rhythm of diplomacy over the years, to turn the story of paintings, authors and artistic values into an instrument of cultural diplomacy.

We start our virtual walk on July 1 with the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin as a sign and gesture to the beginning of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU - one of the largest Bulgarian diplomatic missions abroad. Germany is one of Bulgaria's strategic European partners. At the same time, bilateral cooperation in the field of culture, science and education is active: German is the second most studied foreign language in Bulgaria.

In accordance with the traditions of the city of Berlin, one of the most recognizable symbols of the city - the Berlin Bear, was placed in front of the Bulgarian Embassy on the occasion of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2018. It is the work of Bulgarian artist Klio Karadim (Klimentina Karadimcheva).
Another work is situated on the territory of the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin, which has become a symbol in the Berlin urban environment. The bronze sculpture "Man Walks Through a Wall" is 4 meters high. It was made by the famous Bulgarian artist Georgi Chapkanov - Chapa and according to the author depicts the relentless pursuit of freedom. Its location is not accidental - placed in the city, which has long been divided East and West by the Berlin Wall. "The idea for this work was born in the late 70's. The wall is imaginary, and the passage of man symbolizes the strength of his spirit, "explains Chapa. The sculpture was placed in the garden of the Embassy in 2006.

Expect in the coming weeks the Facebook page of The State Institute for Culture to share with you more interesting works from our mission in Berlin.
