The Bulgarian Film Festival in New York is the first yearly Bulgarian film showcase outside of Bulgaria.
For the past ten years the festival’s selections presented more than two hundred contemporary Bulgarian films in New York and the United States, accompanied by more than sixty filmmakers available for panel discussions and Q&A. The Festival promotes the best accomplishments of the Bulgarian filmmakers and serves as a powerful tool of the cultural diplomacy between the two countries.
It is our honor that the Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev granted his Patronage to the eleventh edition of the Festival.
The Festival will open with the Bulgarian entry for the Academy Award of 2015 “THE JUDGMENT” directed by Stefan Comandarev. The film won the Best Movie award at the “Golden Rose” IFF in Varna, Bulgaria 2014.
On September 30th President Plevneliev will be at the screening of the most internationally successful Bulgarian film for 2015 “THE LESSON” directed by Kristina Grozeva and Peter Valchanov. The documentary title of the evening will be “VAPTZAROV. FIVE TALES FOR AN EXECUTION” directed by Kostadin Bonev.
The Closing Night movie will the highly anticipated “FAMILY RELICS” by Ivan Cherkelov.
The Eleventh edition of “Sofia Independent NYC” is dedicated to the first Centennial of the moviemaking in Bulgaria and the inclusion of the City of Sofia into the UNESCO network of creative cities as “Creative City of Film”.
For the first time the Festival will take place in Chelsea Bow Tie Cinemas and the Festival will have its own office in Manhattan. A newly created American - Bulgarian advisory board will support and look after the future development of this cultural bridge.
The selection includes features and documentaries. Among them are: “THE JUDGMENT”, “THE LESSON”, “BUFFER ZONE”, “OMBRE”, “BARTER”, “THE PTROV’S FILE”, “ADULTERY”, “FAMILY RELICS”, “THE WOMAN OF MY LIFE”.
