The Exhibition “Bulgaria and Mosaics” Visits the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis, Plovdiv
From February 8 to April 2, 2025, the documentary exhibition “Bulgaria and Mosaics” from the program of the State Institute for Culture “Traveling Exhibitions” will be exhibited at the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis, Plovdiv. The exhibition, created by the Balkan Heritage Foundation in cooperation with Bulgarian museums and organizations, presents the remarkable mosaic heritage of Bulgaria, which covers periods from Antiquity to the present day.
26 panels will be exhibited in the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the Episcopal Basilica, which will immerse visitors in the rich cultural heritage of Bulgaria. Each panel contains a QR code that leads to a special digital site providing additional information about the objects, their locations, as well as popular science texts on the history of mosaics, their preservation and modern practices in this field.
During the exhibition, an educational lecture will be held, aimed at pupils from specialized art schools in Plovdiv and students from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts "Prof. Assen Diamandiev". The lecture will examine the technologies and application of mosaics in both Antiquity and contemporary art.
The exhibition "Bulgaria and Mosaics" was realized in 2023 at the initiative of the State Institute for Culture under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. It aims to generate interest in the rich mosaic heritage of the country, emphasizing the importance of its preservation and study in the context of Southeast Europe. Particular attention is paid to mosaics from Antiquity (II–VI centuries) and the twentieth century - two periods of the heyday of mosaic art in Bulgaria.
