A Painting by Nikola Tanev from the Art Collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – a Highlight of the Exhibition “Acqua Alta”
On December 13, 2024, the exhibition “Acqua Alta. History of Bulgarian National Participations in the Venice Biennale 1910 – 2024” was opened at the Kapana Gallery in Plovdiv. The event marks 114 years since the first Bulgarian participation in the oldest and most prestigious world art forum, tracing the development of Bulgarian art and its manifestations in the context of culture, politics and society over the years.
The State Institute for Culture participates in the exhibition with the painting “Balchik” by Nikola Tanev, part of the art collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The work occupies an important place in the exhibition, which brings together more than 60 works of art – both by established Bulgarian classics and contemporary authors.
The exhibition space of the Kapana Gallery has adapted the 11 pavilions of Bulgaria that represented our country at the Venice Biennale – from the debut participation in 1910, when Bulgaria was among only four foreign countries, to the project “The Neighbors” from 2024.
The exhibition is the work of curators Dr. Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva and Dr. Plamen Petrov, with assistant curator Ramona Dimova and artist-designer Georgi Sharov. The project is being implemented with the support of the City Art Gallery – Plovdiv, the Municipality of Plovdiv and a number of institutions and private collectors.
On January 12, Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., the educational program of the exhibition began in the conference hall of the Kapana Gallery. The first guests in the program were one of the authors of the project “The Neighbors” – Krasimira Butseva, and the curator Vasil Vladimirov, who spoke about their experience and impressions of their participation in Venice.
The exhibition will continue until February 20, 2025, during which time more lectures and meetings with the curators will be held, and a full catalog will also be published with the support of the National Culture Fund.
