Festive Exhibition "One Hundred Years of Bulgarian Painting" at the Mission Gallery

14/12/21

On the eve of the upcoming bright holidays we have the pleasure to invite you to the opening of the visiting painting collection entitled "One Hundred Years of Bulgarian Painting" (1920-2021) on December 21 (Tuesday) from 18:00 in the Mission gallery.

The works are from the fund of our partners from Elena and Ivan Duychevi Foundation and the Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Duychev" at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohrivski". The occasion is to celebrate together an important anniversary - 35 years since the establishment of the Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Duychev".

The exhibition, curated by Prof. Aksinia Dzhurova, presents works by Bulgarian artists created over almost a century. The purpose of this small but representative collection of oil paintings is to illustrate the continuity between several generations of artists who have dedicated their works to our Orthodox culture and various aspects of Bulgarian spirituality - alphabet, literature. They reveal the profile of the unit, seen through the eyes of some of the most prominent Bulgarian painters. At the same time, some of the works reveal the search of modern man, his attempts to bridge the gap between past and present.

The 17 works on display are part of the collections of the Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Duychev ”and Elena and Ivan Duychevi Foundation, formed by the donations of the artists at the opening of the Center for its 10th, 20th and 25th anniversary. Today the collections number over 200 works by over 100 artists. Despite the limited number of works included in the exhibition, the public is offered a wide range of stylistic diversity in Bulgarian art for a period of one hundred years. The dynamics of artistic life is reflected, especially in the last decades of the twentieth century, and the portraits of the early twentieth century reveal the coexistence of tradition and modernity in our art.

The exhibition is the result of many years of fruitful cooperation between the Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Duychev ”and the State Institute for Culture at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, within which 6 poster exhibitions were prepared, provided to Bulgarian missions around the world, the last of which you had the opportunity to open in August, this year.

Through this cultural event we would like to wish all connoisseurs of Bulgarian art a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2022.

The event is held in compliance with current anti-epidemiological measures.
