The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivaylo Kalfin opened the “Cyrillic alphabet” exhibition on 10 July 2007.

The event was a joint initiative of the Institute for Culture, the Ministry of Culture and the Regional administration of Plovdiv.

The exhibition was hosted by “Boris Hristov” Music Centre.

The project is based on the idea of Mr. Todor Petkov – Regional governor of Plovdiv, and is a very personal artists’ interpretation of letters. Each of the thirty artists used his or her preferred technique or sought their own inspiration.

The exhibition was shown for the first time on 24 May 2007 in the Art gallery – Plovdiv. After Sofia, it will be displayed in the capital cities of several European countries as an invitation to the audience to get to know the third official alphabet of Europe.

In his opening speech Minister Kalfin stressed on the importance of returning again and again to the unique spiritual deed, to preserve through the centuries the specific Cyrillic alphabet as the most outstanding expression of our cultural identity. The choice of place to host the exhibition was deliberate - the home of the other emblematic figure of Bulgarian culture – the great opera artist Boris Hristov.
