Virtual Meeting with the Exhibition "Bread", Visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

28/12/20

The State Institute for Culture to the Minister of Foreign Affairs together with the ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund created a virtual touch of a national treasure - the exhibition "Bread" with drawings and texts by the artist who lived for many years in the United States Atanas Katchamakoff. It is part of the collection of the Fund and is arranged in the representative halls of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The artist and sculptor Atanas Katchamakoff is not very famous in our country, but he has a preserved place in the history of American art. He was born in the gardening village of Lyaskovets in 1898 and died in 1984. He studied in the class of the sculptor Prof. Ivan Lazarov at the Academy of Arts in Sofia. In 1924 he left for Paris and then for the United States. In 1931, Katchamakoff won the First Prize at the large exhibition in New York for his work "Indian with a Child" made of marble. He settled in Hollywood and worked for some of the major film productions such as "Song of Songs", "Ben Hur", "The King of Kings", "Helen of Troy", "Noah's Ark" and others.

In 1979 the artist returned to Bulgaria and made a large exhibition at the National Art Gallery. His works (30 drawings and 2 sculptures, donated by the artist) are kept in the ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund, and the drawings will visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until the end of April 2021.

The exhibition "Bread" is part of the partnership between ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund and the State Institute for Culture. This is one of the ways for the Bulgarian cultural heritage, in the case of Atanas Katchamakoff, to be popularized and socialized, that is why we are realizing a joint video in which Dr. Mila Stareishinska-Angelova, an expert from the fund and art critic, talks about the topics in the exhibition and the creator himself.
