The event was initiated by the President of Italy, the Delegation of the European Commission in Italy and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Alinari Foundation – the oldest photo library in the world - was the main organizer.

Thee exhibition brings together images that present the development, social dynamics and socio-cultural changes in all European countries. Bulgaria was represented by the works of the young photographer Alexander Mihaylov (on the picture – “The renovation processes at the Church of Boyana”).

The exposition recreates visually emblematic events from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which led to shaping the new image of Europe. The displayed pictures illustrate the contribution of each of the 27 member states for creating the specific European identity in the cultural, historical, economical, social and ethnical aspects.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Ambassadors of the EU member states, representatives of Italian institutions, people from the arts sector and visitors. The “Fratelli Alinari” Foundation was founded in 1852 and is the oldest institution in the world working in photography.
