Cultural Programme of the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU with a Bulgarian link

03/04/17
The current Maltese Presidency of the Council of EU has shown interest in organising and holding joint cultural events in Malta and Bulgaria. A special focus in all the cultural events is the participation of young people and raising their awareness.

On March 31, the newly opened Bulgarian Sunday School in Malta had, for the first time, a video link with a school in Bulgaria, putting the children from Malta in touch with pupils and teachers from the 61st School in Sofia. Both schools are named for Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The video link was to the new multimedia hall in the presidential palace, San Anton Palace. The event was under the auspices of Her Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malta, Mrs Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who conveyed a special message to the participants.

Symbolising the good relations between Malta and Bulgaria was the fact that the event took place on Freedom Day - the National Day of the Republic of Malta. A visit to Malta by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria is planned for this year.

The Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria supported the organisation of the event, with the personal assistance of the Bulgarian Ambassador in Rome, Mr. Marin Raykov and the Ambassador of Malta to Bulgaria Prof. Lino Bianco. The State Institute for Culture also supported the initiative.

The cultural events will continue on April 19 2017 in the Varna City Gallery, where, together with the Municipality and the Varna University of Management, a Day of Maltese Cuisine will be held.

The special guest at the event will be Mr. Edgar Preca, the husband of Her Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malta, who, along with students from the University, will present the culinary traditions of Malta. The event has been organised at the initiative and with the co-operation of the State Institute for Culture in partnership with the Ambassador of Malta to Bulgaria, Professor Lino Bianco. The event will also receive media coverage, as the State Institute for Culture has arranged for Mr Edgar Preca to appear on Nova Televizia's programme "Na Kafe", where he will speak about  Malta's cultural and culinary traditions.

May also sees the second consecutive year of the Days of Bulgarian Culture in Malta, which will take place under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Malta.
