Photo exhibition 'Traditions' on display in the Atrium in Dublin City Council

15/09/08

Traditions is a unique ethnographic collection of photos, presenting some of the most colourful rituals from Bulgarian culture. The photos capture ceremonies, which are performed by Bulgarians from different origins: Christians, Muslims, Turks and Roma.
The tumultuous history of the country, located on the borderline between the East and the West, has brought an extraordinary diversity of public holidays. The pagan traces from Antiquity blend with the culture of the founders of the Bulgarian state from the early Middle Ages. Christianity then influenced these beliefs.
The photographs capture the genuine rites in their natural surroundings, in the original atmosphere of each holiday. What we see here are not actors, but the central dramatic personae in a rite – consumed with its mysticism and mystery. This authenticity has been of foremost priority in bringing together this collection.
Traditions will be on display in the Atrium in Dublin City Council's Civic Offices from:
8th -14th September  and   29th Sep- 3rd October 2008 and during the Annual Assembly of Asstiation of European Capitals .
