Exhibition of Bulgarian Painting at the Fuji Art Museum in Tokyo
In the period from October 12 to December 22, 2024, a special exhibition of Bulgarian painting from the end of the 20th century is being held at the Tokyo Museum of Art "Fuji". The exhibition is part of the museum's project for exhibitions organized in partnership with embassies of other countries "Pathways to cultural communication with the world". Bulgaria is the third country that participates in this international museum project.
30 paintings from the art fund of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Tokyo are presented, mainly from the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, by established Bulgarian artists such as Dobri Dobrev, Keazim Isinov, Hinko Hinkov, Maya Docheva, Dimitar Kirov, Pavel Mitkov and others. Some of the works are from the private collection of the Japanese businessman and friend of Bulgaria, Mr. Hiroshi Harada. In 2023, 61 of the paintings were donated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria by the heirs of Mr. Harada and are being exhibited publicly for the first time.
Also presented are Bulgarian Orthodox icons made with different techniques.
The exhibition is part of the program of the Embassy of Bulgaria in Tokyo to mark this year the triple anniversary of Bulgarian-Japanese relations - 115 years since the beginning of official contacts, 85 years since the establishment and 65 years since the restoration of diplomatic relations.
During the period of the exhibition, the "Sena" restaurant at the museum offers a special "Afternoon Tea" menu with pies, nut cakes, parfaits and sweets according to Bulgarian recipes developed together with the embassy, and the shop at the museum sells traditional Bulgarian products and souvenirs.
The exhibition was opened on October 15 by Ambassador Marieta Arabadzhieva at a press conference at the residence of the Bulgarian ambassador in Tokyo, presenting the exhibition to specialized art media, influencers and representatives of museums and galleries. On November 2, 2024, Ambassador Arabadzhieva visited the exposition. On the same day, a lecture on "Bulgarian culture and art" by Petar Nikolaev, first secretary at the embassy, was held in the museum.
On November 7, a Bulgarian needlework embroidery workshop was held by Irene Yamami, and on December 7, there will also be workshops on "Martenitsi" and "Cyrillic".
